Indore: With the Department of Higher Education (DHE) closing window for registration for college-level counselling on Sunday, students who have not registered for the counselling so far have only colleges with minority institute status left as an option for admission in conventional courses.
The minority colleges have permission to carry out admission in offline mode till August 14. “The minority institute will have to upload their final list of admissions on DHE website on August 14. This means that we can admit students in UG courses to that date only,” said Anas Iqbal, academic director of Vishisht School of Management.
About 100 colleges in the district are admitting students in conventional UG courses including BA, BCom, BSc, BBA, LLB etc. Of these 100, as many as 42 colleges are minority institutes who are exempted from centralised online admission counselling.
They are permitted to enrol students in offline mode. All the major colleges of the city are having minority status. Till last year, about 32 colleges in the city had minority status. As the DHE would allow minority institutes to admit students in offline mode, nearly 10 more institutes obtained the status this year.
A minority college director said wishing anonymity that they observed that minority institutes are at advantage as they are given more time than regular colleges to admit students. “This is the reason that we also obtained minority college status this year,” he added.
The primary condition to obtain minority college status is to give more than 50 per cent of representations in the college board from minority community. After the status is obtained, the college is required to admit more than 50 per cent students from minority community. Hardly any college adhere to the latter condition but the DHE has not taken action against deviant colleges as yet.
Non-minority colleges lodged complaints pertaining to this but all fell on deaf ears. Roshan College director Abhinash Dave said: “If the DHE won’t take action against deviant colleges, then the purpose of granting minority institute status will remain defeated. And taking advantage of this ignorance of the DHE, more and more institutes will avail minority college status and opt out of centralised online admission counselling.”
He also stated that the DHE should provide level playing field to non-minority colleges. “While registration for admission in non-minority colleges had been closed, minority colleges have been permitted to continue enrol students till August 14. Why this disparity. This disparity needs to be addressed,” he said. Non-minority institutes have dashed off a letter to the DHE asking it to allow them also to enrol students till August 14.

Student to report to colleges for admission
Students who have registered for college level counselling would have to report to colleges for admission. They will have to make visit to the college and see if vacancies is available in the course they are seeking admission. If the vacancies are available admissions will be granted on merit basis. The last date to visit college is August 10.
