Penrith sack coach Griffin with two years left on contract
Penrith have sensationally sacked coach Anthony Griffin just four weeks out from the finals.
The Panthers confirmed on Monday afternoon that Griffin's contract would ripped up after months of speculation about the coach's future.
Griffin's assistant Cameron Ciraldo is set to take over for the rest of the season.
"There has been much speculation and rumours about the club and head coach Anthony Griffin over the last few weeks," Panthers Group chief executive Brian Fletcher said.
"After discussions with Anthony Griffin it is time to end that speculation. By mutual agreement, the club and Anthony have agreed to part ways, effective immediately.
"Anthony departs the club after much success, having taken the Panthers to the finals in the last two years and leaves the club on track for another finals appearance in 2018.
"We would like to thank Anthony for his service to Panthers and wish him well for the future."
Griffin had been on contract with the Panthers until the end of the 2020 season.
Penrith have chalked up miraculous comeback wins in the last two weeks, mowing down big deficits to both the Sea Eagles and Raiders to keep their top-four hopes alive.
They are in fifth spot, trailing only the Dragons for a spot in the top four on points differential. But it hasn't been enough to save Griffin.
