Irrfan Khan’s Karwaan was the surprise winner at this week’s domestic box office, beating out Anil Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s more mainstream Fanney Khan, and Rishi Kapoor and Taapsee Pannu’s Mulk.

According to a report on Box Office India, the road trip comedy-drama emerged victorious over the weekend with Rs 7.75 crore, followed by Fanney Khan and Mulk, which made Rs 6.75 crore. A significant portion of Karwaan’s earnings, according to the report, came from Bangalore. Mulk was released in fewer screens than Fanney Khan, hence its underperformance isn’t as disappointing.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible - Fallout was number one for the second weekend in a row, with Rs 13 crore. The film opened to Rs 56 crore in its first weekend, and has made a total of Rs 67 crore so far.

Reviews for all three new releases have leaned on the positive side. Karwaan has an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on five reviews, Fanney Khan has a 83% score based on six reviews and Mulk also has an 80% score, again based on five reviews.

Karwaan’s release comes at a difficult time, with star Irrfan currently undergoing treatment for a rare cancer in London. The actor has given his blessing to the film’s team for them to go ahead with the release without his participation in the promotions.
