MEERUT: In a case of honour killing, a woman returning home from hospital with her newborn baby girl was shot allegedly by her nephew who had opposed her love marriage. She died in hospital later. The accused has been arrested.
Hina, in her late 20s, had delivered a baby girl on Saturday. She was returning home with her mother-in-law, Parveen ion Monday, when she was shot. The incident happened at a stone’s throw from Sorabgate police outpost in Kotwali area. Hina's nephew, Guddu, pumped three bullets into her when she was travelling in an e-rickshaw. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she succumbed to injuries later in the evening.

A resident of Bhumiyapul under Lisari Gate police station, Hina had married her Rashid in March in 2016. It was a love marriage and the alliance did not go down well with the family of the deceased, especially Guddu. He had been harbouring an old grudge against Hina's husband, Rashid, who was from a different caste.

According to the police, Guddu had attacked Hina last year when the latter was visiting her maternal home for the first time after her marriage. An FIR was lodged in the case but the investigation could not gather steam as the family members intervened and eventually a final report was filed in the case by the local police.

Caught off guard, local police now claim that they could not do much in the previous case as it was settled through a compromise despite serious charges of attempt to murder.

The family of the deceased now claims that Guddu had made his intentions clear and publicly vowed to kill Hina.

Meanwhile, police claim to have made an early breakthrough in the case. "We have arrested the main accused Guddu and have also recovered the murder weapon. We are trying to trace others who could possibly be involved in the incident,” said Ranvijay Singh, superintendent of police (city).
