NU forgets to upload UG admission data

Nagpur: The Nagpur University (NU) had notified a common admission schedule for affiliated colleges to follow and asked them to provide vacancy data by July 5. However, the NU has not just forgot to upload the data on its portal even after a month of receiving it but also appoint observers.
The common schedule was introduced last year and had helped students in understanding the seat matrix at different colleges. It has also brought to fore the large vacancies at colleges where students used to be turned away.

NU college section said it was busy with PG admissions and couldn’t get time either to scrutinize the list or appoint observers for around 450 affiliated colleges.

The first admissions were held between June 25 and June 30 based on the merit list while July 2 to 4 the waitlist students. Vacant seats, if any, are being filled from July 5 onwards through spot admissions.

This time the NU had also banned first-year admissions at over 150 colleges.

A principal said several colleges didn’t follow the schedule and exploited the university’s preoccupation with postgraduate admissions.

“Unlike last year, the students remained in dark about the number of vacant seats at their preferred colleges. Lack of information makes them make wrong decision,” another principal said.

Bigger problem is of extra fee or donation charged by popular colleges and additional admissions even before getting them sanctioned by the university.

Many most sought-after colleges had already admitted students assuming that they would get 20% hike in intake capacity. “Students were given informal receipts without dates. The charge ranged between Rs20,000 to Rs50,000 per seat,” a college official said.

The move to grant admission for Arts and Commerce faculties may not pose major challenge for colleges, but admitting more in Science must be a reason for worry. A college teacher said that additional labs, facilities and equipment are also needed if there are more number of students than the sanctioned intake.

NU officials said not a single complaint was received and it is too late now to upload the data provided by the colleges.

Pro-VC Pramod Yeole said admissions went as per schedule and the university had appointed observers to check malpractices.
