CPM worker stabbed to death in Kerala, RSS denies involvement

A CPI(M) worker was stabbed to death in north Kerala’s Kasaragod district on Sunday night, triggering tension in the area.

Police said four motorcycle-borne people waylaid and stabbed Abubaker Siddique while he was returning to his home in Uppala. He succumbed to his injuries soon after being rushed to a hospital in nearby Mangaluru.

Although the CPI(M) district leadership has blamed the RSS for the attack, the latter denied responsibility. The ruling party has called for a shutdown in Mancheswaram taluk on Monday to protest the murder.

Police said they have identified four suspects, and a hunt has been launched to arrest them. “The RSS is trying to vitiate peace in the area. Its cadres are provoking our party workers,” said CPI(M) district secretary M V Balakrishnan.

District police superintendent Dr A Sreenivas said a strict vigil is being kept over the area.

The enmity between the two cadre-based parties in north Kerala dates back to over three decades, and at least 300 people from both camps have been killed in retaliatory attacks.
