Prestatyn Town are thrilled to announce this evening that David Hayes has decided to return to the Seasiders for the 2018/19 campaign.
The former captain and legend of the club retired at the end of last season following a hugely successful trophy-filled career, but has now decided to rejoin his hometown side during this period of rebuilding.
With over 200 appearances for the club at the highest level of Welsh football, Hayes rose to prominence in 2005/06 - captaining his side to an unprecedented league title which saw the Seasiders go undefeated. He went on to be a part of the team that won the Welsh Cup for the first time in the club's history, as well as proudly captaining his side to European victory.
A natural leader at the back, a great reader of the game and a colossus in both boxes - the defender has long been considered one of the best around in his position.
Speaking after signing on the dotted line, Hayes said: “The club asked me to come in and help stabilise things, and after thinking it through - I’m happy to be back and helping in any way I can. I’ve watched the new lads play - they’re a young side with a lot of hunger, and there’s so much quality in there. I think that little bit of experience around them will help, but Leon and Ryan have been doing a fantastic job.
“A big reason for me coming back is definitely the fans. Home and away, there’s no other fans like them. I’ve had some great times with this club, and they’ve always been there no matter what. We always had a strong core that grew up together, and I can see that happening again with the talented youngsters that are coming through. I’m excited to get into training now and start the season strongly.”
Leon Field commented: “Dave Hayes is a born leader. He plays with so much passion, and yet he’s such a calming influence to those around him. He’s taken this great club through its best times, and he’s come back on board now to help recreate that going forward.
“He’s still one of the best defenders around, and he’s turned down the opportunity to play back in the Welsh Premier League to come and help rebuild this new look Prestatyn side.”
Hayes could make his return for the Seasiders this Saturday in their Huws Gray Alliance season opener at home to Airbus Broughton.
