
Elections to the post of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman will be held on Thursday, said Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu.
The Centre is expected to face continued protests over the Assam NRC from the Opposition in the Monsoon session of Parliament Monday. The protests, led by the Trinamool Congress, had disrupted the proceedings in both the houses of Parliament on Friday last week.
In Rajya Sabha today, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot will move that the alternate amendments made in the Bill to grant constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) be taken into consideration. The Bill was passed unanimously in the lower house on Thursday.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in Rajya Sabha will move the Bill to further amend the Indian Penal Code, Indian Evidence Act, 1872, the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, as passed by Lok Sabha.
In the evening, the labour committee meeting in Lok Sabha will consider reports and drafts on the implementation of various PF Acts and Jan Shikshan Sansthan Scheme.
The Opposition highlighted the negligence in the Muzaffarpur shelter home case which led to a brief uproar in the Lok Sabha. Congress leader Mallikarjun Khadge joined RJD MP Jay Prakash Narayan Yadav in the protest, alleging the tampering of evidence in the case. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said the government has approved a CBI inquiry in the case.
Speaking on the issue of Maratha protests, INC MP Hussain Dalwai said in Rajya Sabha today that the Maharashtra government did not pay attention to the peaceful protests by the Maratha community, which led them to protest violently for reservation.
RJD MP Prof. Manoj Kumar said that a concrete list of different castes and communities needs to be prepared by the government so that the people get to know about their representation in the country. He further said that the reservation is not a financial issue rather a representational one.
Senior INC Motilal Vora raised the issue of human trafficking in the Lok Sabha today and asked the government to ensure fast and stringent punishment for those involved in the crime. He also asked the government to keep a check on such activities on borders.
Debate on development of tourist places underway in Lok Sabha. Union Minister Alphons Kannanthanam is giving the details of projects launched by the tourism ministry in various states.
NC leader Farookh Abdullah said in Lok Sabha today that giving priority to adventure sports in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir will give rise to tourism in the states. Union Minister Alphons Kannanthanam replied that the government has launched maximum number of projects in Jammu and Kashmir under Swadesh Darshan scheme to give an impetus to tourism in the state.
Shivaji Patil from Shiv Sena raised a question with the Commerce Ministry relating to shortage of skilled workers despite the increasing enrolment in ITI courses and demand in the market. He also asked the government to ensure the minimum wages for skilled workers in the private sector units.
Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu ensured that the government will look into the matter.
Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu stated in the Upper House today that the house will be in session till late today considering the paucity of time.
Trinamool Congress MPs protested outside the Parliament House on Monday, stating that why there was no undeclared emergency in India. The protest was in relation to the Assam NRC issue.
