Protests were held at some places in Muslim-majority districts of this division on Monday amid a general strike in support of Article 35A, which grants special rights and privileges to the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir. The strike, called by various social and religious organisations, disrupted the life in some areas of the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri along with Kishtwar, Doda and Ramban districts in the Chenab valley region, officials said. The Supreme Court posted the case for hearing to the week commencing August 26.

Indonesian authorities said Monday that rescuers still haven’t reached some devastated parts of the tourist island of Lombok after a powerful earthquake flattened houses and toppled bridges, killing at least 91 people and shaking neighboring Bali. The death toll is expected to rise.

During Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha on Monday, TDP member Ram Mohan Naidu said backward districts of Andhra Pradesh were promised a package on the lines of Bundelkhand. He claimed that the per head allocation was much lesser. He also claimed the State government’s funds of ₹350 crore has been taken back. Other Members from the party displayed placards over the Speaker’s objections.

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern returned to Parliament on Monday to run her first cabinet meeting, six weeks after giving birth to her daughter, becoming only the second elected leader to do so in office.

Ministers applauded as Ardern entered the cabinet meeting room and took her place beside Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, thanking him for running the country, allowing her to become its first premier to take maternity leave when in office.
