CHENNAI: A 24-year-old man, who was caught drunk driving and triple riding, jumped into the Adyar river from Thiru-vi-ka Bridge reportedly after he was asked to produce the driving licence by police during a vehicle check on Saturday night.
The man is still missing. Police have launched a search for him.
Police identified the man as Radhakrishnan, 24, a resident of Adyar. On Saturday, around 10.15pm, he was riding a two-wheeler with his friend Suresh and another youth riding pillion. A team of traffic police, who were stopping motorists on the bridge, asked him to stop. Radhakrishnan was asked to blow into a breathalyzer and the reading confirmed that he had consumed a copious amount of alcohol, a police officer said.
Police checked the motorbike and found a bottle. After issuing him a challan, police asked him to produce his driving licence. Pretending to search the licence, he went running towards the parapet wall of the bridge and jumped into the Adyar river.
A few policemen ran to his rescue, and others alerted the fire and rescue
services department. Two vehicles from the
Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services were pressed into service and they searched for Radhakrishnan with flashlights but to no avail. On Sunday morning, the firefighters — with divers and fishermen recruited for the operation — used an inflatable rubber boat to continue the search, but again without any luck.
The Adyar police have registered a man missing case and are searching for him. They said he may not have drowned as there is just four feet water in the river.
Police said Radhakrishnan, a commerce graduate, had earlier been in jail in an assault case. After his release, the family moved from RA Puram to Pallikaranai and later to Adyar to ensure that he stayed away from bad company, the officer said.
