The traffic police will soon intensify its day-and-night bike patrol in the city to track road offences and parking violations. Five new customised motorbikes, given by Suzuki Motorcycles India Limited to the city police, in addition to the two existing ones, will be used for this.
“The new patrol bikes are customised to meet the road enforcement requirements of the patrol squads. They have got special announcement facilities, light arrangements, and siren systems,” said Deputy Police Commissioner (Traffic) P.K. Raju. The service would be launched in the city soon after the completion of the registration formalities with the Motor Vehicles Department, he told The Hindu.
With the launch of the revamped bike patrol squad, the light motor vehicles now being used for the purpose will be deployed in the outskirts of the city. The bike patrol squads will be operating within the city limits as they will be able to manage the rush on city roads and quickly reach the intended destinations for enforcement activities.
One-day training
The police are also planning to name the new patrol squad as ‘Zebra patrol’ with the permission of the higher authorities. Selected patrol squad members will be given one-day training to ride the new bikes comfortably and learn its features for effective operations.
“As of now, the city police have 10 four-wheel vehicles exclusively for the purpose of sectoral patrol. With the launch of the bike patrol, most of the vehicles can be diverted to the city suburbs for better surveillance,” said Mr. Raju.
