MUMBAI: Two people have been arrested in connection with two cases pertaining to theft of gold jewellery by conmen.
In the first case, a jeweller was arrested from Bhayander for allegedly duping another jeweller of 4 kg of gold worth Rs 1.37 crore. The police said that the arrested jeweller, Dilkush Parasmal Jain (32), had taken the gold from the other jeweller to "sell" it to jewellers in
Kerala. Instead, he fled with the gold, said a police office.
Jain had met the other jeweller, who owns a gold jewellery shop in south Mumbai, and taken the gold from him for sale. "Initially, to gain the jeweller's trust, Jain gave him the sale proceeds. The second time, he took 4.kg of gold ornaments worth Rs 1.37 crore and vanished." said an officer from LT Marg police station.
Complainant even tried to call Jain on his mobile number which was found to be switched off. One person was even sent to his residence in Bhayander where it was learnt that he has left the place long back as it was on rental basis. On Saturday police got a tip off that he was likely to come to meet his friend in Bhayander. Police laid a trap and arrested him.
In the other case, a man who posed as a policeman and allegedly robbed a businessman from
Andhra Pradesh of gold ornaments weighing 750 grams has been arrested. The police said that the accused, Amjad Ali Akbar, and his accomplices had robbed the businessman at Dadar.
The businessman, Chinna Katta Swami, who had lodged a police complaint, had arrived in the city to get make some designer jeweller made for his daughter's wedding.
As Swami and his Mumbai-based relative were passing by the Kabutarkhana area in Dadar, Akbar and his accomplice-Bhiwandi resident Sadiq Zaffri who is wanted by the police-stopped them and insisted on checking their bags.
The police said that whenever Akbar and Zafri preyed on a target, they would wear khaki trousers, a half-sleeved shirt and brown shoes-a dress code typical of policemen.
Akbar, Zafri and their aides frisked Swami and rummaged through their bag in which about 750 gm, of gold was kept. He wanted to sell this gold and make new jewellery. "They distracted Swami and fled with the gold," said an officer.
