PUNE: Two men were arrested for charging at and assaulting two policemen at
Chandni Chowk early on Sunday.
The policemen were assaulted after they requested some men in their group to go home instead of creating a ruckus on the road. The Kothrud police arrested the two men, identified as Omkar Shankar Kudale (24) and Suraj
Eknath Temghire (27), both residents of Laxminagar in Kothrud.
Constable P B Gaikwad of the Kothrud police station has lodged a complaint against the duo. Sub-inspector M J Waghmare of the Kothrud police said, “A group of 15 men had gathered in front of a hotel located on Paud road for a party. Some of them were drunk. After consuming alcohol, they started arguing with each other,” he said.
The two arrested men, who are casual labourers, were not drunk, he added. “The group had dined at the hotel late on Saturday night and started chatting with each other on the road after the hotel shut. Following some arguments, the men started abusing each other and created a ruckus on the road,” Waghmare said.
Passers by called up the police control room suspecting that something was amiss. Gaikwad and his colleague went to the spot after receiving the call.
At first, the policemen attempted to pacify the group and most of them their obeyed orders. “However, Kudale and Temghire started arguing with the cops and told them to leave immediately. When the two constables refused to leave the spot, Kudale and Temghire charged at them. They grabbed Gaikwad’s collar and pushed him hard. He fell down on the road,” Waghmare said.
Senior police officers reached the spot and took the two men to the police station.
