Chhattisgarh has received more than Rs 12.21 crore this year so far for building tribal students' hostels, the Central Government has informed.

During last three financial years and current year 2018-19, a total of Rs 28355.97 lakh has been allocated to  Chhattisgarh Government for construction of 91 hostels for boys and girls.

The amount allocated to Government of Chhattisgarh under the scheme ‘Hostels for ST Girls and Boys’ during last three financial years and current year is to the tune of Rs  1221.74 lakh for construction of 13 hostels. Out of which a total of Rs  231.86 lakh has been utilized upto July 24, 2018 as informed by the State Government, it informed.

Besides the above mentioned scheme, construction of hostels is also supported under the MoTA’s Scheme of ‘SCA to TSS’ and under‘Grants under Article 275(1) of the Constitution of India’ based on the proposal received from the State Government.

Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) was running a separate scheme “Hostels for ST Girls and Boys” under which funds were provided to State Governments for construction of hostels

However, as a part of rationalization of schemes of the Ministry, it has been decided to subsume the intervention of ‘construction of boys and girls hostels’ under the Schemes of ‘Special Central Assistance to Tribal Sub-Scheme (SCA to TSS) from 2018-19 onwards, wherein assistance is provided as 100% grant in the form of an additive to State funds and efforts for tribal development.

Chhattisgarh's Tribal and Scheduled Caste Development Minister Kedar Kashyap in December last year had called on Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thawarchand Gehlot at Shastri Bhavan in New Delhi and had handed over a proposal for establishing new ashram hostels and girls residential schools in the state.

He said that new residential schools should be opened for promoting education in remote areas of the State and had submitted a proposal in that context to the Union Minister.
