‘Train law students in analytics, research too’

HUBBALLI: Along with academics, law colleges must train students in research oriented, argumentative and analytic skills, said N C Shrinivas, Principal Secretary, state law department.
He spoke after inaugurating the State Level Model Legislative Session Competition-2018, organized by Karnataka Institute for Law and Parliamentary Reforms (KILPAR) in association with Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) here on Saturday.

Shrinivas highlighted the importance of excellent quality legal education to improve the legal field and society. He also spoke about the need for being proficient in regional language and English as well.

Prof P Ishwar Bhat, Vice-Chancellor, KSLU, said that such competitions enhance skills of advocacy, improve confidence and help students seize opportunities available in the future. He also spoke on the importance of the British Parliament which played a vital role in the legal field, which was later imbibed in the Indian parliamentary system.

During the training, students were made aware of the working of the parliament and assembly. They were also taught research skills in developing their positions on an issue and trained to debate in order to develop oral presentation skills and critical thinking, listening and doing research.

In the valedictory held in the evening, Prof C S Patil, Dean, KSLU, spoke on the importance of parliamentary democracy and the role of youngsters in strengthening the democratic form of government.

H K Jagadeesh, special secretary, law department; A V Shrinath, additional secretary, K S Vijay, senior civil judge and deputy secretary department of parliamentary affairs, Bengaluru; Mallikarjun Nagarale, senior civil judge and deputy secretary, department of parliamentary affairs and others were present.
