Belagavi: The
Congress Road, the 2.3-km stretch f double road between Gogte Circle and 3rd Railway Gate here will get a
concrete surface under the
Smart City project.
The road was asphalted just before the elections, But, its condition has become pathetic with large potholes opening up after the recent rains.
The authorities have been targeted by various organizations on social media since the past few days. Different organizations have demonstrated against the bad condition of the road to draw the attention of the authorities.
Now,
Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has decided to build a concrete road on this stretch for its longer durability. Although, the proposal for building the concrete road has been there since the past six months, it was not considered seriously.
BCC commissioner Shashidhar Kurer, who is also the MD of
Belagavi Smart City Limited (BSCL), said that they have decided to build a concrete road instead of asphalting it.
The plan also includes making a bicycle track along with footpaths and a drainage system along Congress Road, said Kurer.
According to BCC, sources the tender process for the work is on. However, actual work will commence only after the railway over bridge (ROB) work at Gogte Circle is completed. Due to the ongoing ROB work, traffic from other roads has been diverted to Congress Road and there is possibility of the ROB work being completed before the rainy season ends.
Recently, BJP MLAs Abhay Patil and Anil Benake had demanded a high-level probe into the worsening condition of city roads.
The road got its name in the memory of the All Indian Congress Session chaired by Mahatma Gandhi in 1924.
