The Agriculture Department has sanctioned an emergency financial aid of ₹56.9- lakh to 54 padashekara samithis for reconstructing outer bunds damaged in floods in the district.
Officials said here on Saturday that the samithis had initiated measures to construct bunds on a war footing in paddy polders ravaged by flooding.
The padashekara samithis in Kainakary grama panchayat, one of the worst hit areas, were allotted ₹27.54- lakh.
Financial assistance was provided to other samithis in panchayats including Champakulam (₹3.44 lakh), Karuvatta (₹50,000), Ambalappuzha North (₹20,000), Ambalappuzha South (₹56,000), Thakazhi (₹5.84 lakh), Nedumudi (₹1.61 lakh), Edathua (₹3.88 lakh), Punnapra North (₹46,000), Punnapra South (₹1 lakh), Purakkad (₹1 lakh), Pulinkunnu (₹3.50 lakh) and Alappuzha municipality (₹ 7.37 lakh).
Relief camps
Meanwhile, Additional Chief Secretary Rajeev Sadanandan and State Mission Director Keshvendra Kumar on Saturday visited relief camps in Kuttanad taluk and reviewed the measures taken to prevent disease outbreaks.
They later visited the Pulinkunnu taluk hospital.
The Additional Chief Secretary directed the authorities to prepare a master plan for the construction of a new building for the hospital.
Mr. Sadanandan, who attended a review meeting at the district medical office here, commended the work carried out by the Health Department in the flood-hit region.
He approved an action plan prepared by the Health Department to tackle outbreaks.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will chair a high-level meeting to review the flood situation and relief operations in the district on Sunday.
Ministers, MPs, MLAs, the Chief Secretary and department heads will attend the meeting to be held at the Government T.D. Medical College Golden Jubilee Hall at 10 a.m. In a statement, Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala said he would not attend the meeting in protest against the Chief Minister not visiting the flood-hit areas.
