PANAJI: With only light rain being witnessed in most parts of Goa, the deficit in seasonal rainfall total is mounting, as the
India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji recorded a shortfall of 13% on Saturday morning.
The total seasonal rainfall had touched 1858.7mm (73.1 inches) on Saturday. At this stage, a total of 2136.4mm (84.1 inches), a difference of more than 10 inches, is considered normal at this stage.
The quantum of rainfall has dropped significantly since July 24. IMD, Panaji has been recording a state average rainfall of less than 8mm during the last 11 days.
During the last 24 hours,
Sanguem recorded the highest rainfall of 15.8mm and all other centres recorded much less. Figures of Ponda and
Margao were not available. “The overall deficit of 13% is within normal range,” M L Sahu, director, IMD, Panaji said.
During June, the seasonal total had logged a surplus of 9%, as the monsoon had advanced over Goa on June 8. Incessant rain had even shot up the surplus to 31% around June 22. But the quantum of rainfall has shown a downward trend during the last week of July and in a reverse, the deficit mounted to 9%.
The Met department has forecast heavy rainfall in isolated places on Sunday.
Meteorologists are watching the formation of a low pressure area in Bay of Bengal. “This is likely to yield good rainfall,” Sahu said.
