A 22-year-old student who was waiting for her friend at a park in Lutyens’ Delhi was allegedly harassed and stalked by three men, said the police on Friday. One of the alleged harassers has been arrested. The police said that the matter was reported on August 1.
In her complaint, the resident of Ramesh Park said she was waiting for her friend in Nehru Park, Chanakyapuri Diplomatic Enclave, at 3 p.m. when three men started passing lewd remarks at her. She got up to move to another location, but the men followed her.
“I walked up to them to stop this behaviour but they replied ‘what is the harm in looking at you?’,” she wrote in the complaint.
The woman said that while she was engaged in the argument, her friend also arrived at the spot. The three accused started walking away but the complainant’s friend nabbed one of them. He then made a call to the police and the accused was taken into custody.
“The arrested man was identified as Chander Mohan, a resident of Munirka. He works at a showroom in Connaught Place. A case under Sections 509 [word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman] and 354-D [stalking] has been registered at Chanakyapuri police station,” said a senior police officer.
Safety issue
When asked about safety of visitors, especially women, at parks in high-security areas, DCP (New Delhi) Madhur Verma said that there are four cycle-patrol staff in Nehru Park.
On July 15 this year, a 15-year-old girl was raped by her friend in a deserted park in east Delhi. On December 18, 2017, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three men in a park in north-west Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh.
