Identify Bangladeshis residing illegally: UP BJP to Yogi Govt

The Uttar Pradesh unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has asked the State Government to expedite the process to identify Bangladeshis illegally residing in the State and to arrest or deport them to their country.

In a briefing, BJP State spokesman Shalabh Mani Tripathi said the UP Government was serious on internal security.

“In the last few months, 270 Bangladeshis illegally residing in Uttar Pradesh have been deported and 75 others have been sent to jail. The time has come to expedite the process and identify all those illegally residing here,” he said.

Attacking Opposition parties, particularly Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, Tripathi said the influx of people from Bangladesh had increased during the regimes of Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati as both gave political patronage to them. “Many of them have got Indian identities through BPL and Aadhaar cards. Some of them have even acted as conduit for anti-national elements. The then political dispensation knew about this but did nothing for political reasons,” the BJP State spokesman said.

“The Yogi Government acted tough against these elements. When he took charge as Chief Minister, he issued directives to the police to identify those living illegally in UP. After that, several arrests were made,” Tripathi said. Meanwhile, Government spokesman Sidharth Nath Singh said that after National Register of Citizens (NRC) of Assam was made public, the UP Government was also contemplating to start a similar exercise.

“The process to identify illegal residents from Bangladesh is already on but the Government may take a holistic approach on this issue,” he said.
