Indore: Merely 53% seats filled after 2 rounds of counselling in BEd admissions

Indore: The Bachelor of Education (BEd) course has failed to draw students in 2018-19 session. In first two round of centralised online admission counselling, merely 53 percent seats have been filled. Out of 3150 seats in 31 BEd colleges in the city, 1475 seats are lying vacant after two rounds of counselling. That means merely 1675 students took admission against 3150 seats in the colleges here.

This was revealed when MPOnline, a service provider of state government, released list of vacancies at BEd colleges in state for third and final round of counselling. A closer look at the list revealed that maximum number of seats was filled in Shri Yashwant College and New Era College. As many as 73 out of 100 seats were filled in these two college followed by Christian Eminent Academy (72 seats) and Comp-Feeders AISECT College (71).

“Out of 31 colleges in the city, around 10 received below 40 percent admissions,” said Girdhar Nagar, director of Indore Mahavidyalaya. This year, the BEd admission process was delayed. As a result, Department of Higher Education, which holds entrance test and centralised online admission counselling for admission in BEd course, skipped the entrance test and held counselling on the basis of qualifying exam marks.

The DHE advertised 58,000 seats and called applications from students. In the first round of counselling merely 29 percent seats were filled. The colleges were expecting good admission in second round but they were left disappointed. In second round, merely 24 percent seats were filled.

Admissions were allocated on nearly 75 percent of seats in colleges in Indore but less than 53 percent paid fee and confirmed their admissions. “Many students who took admission in BEd colleges in the city were from other cities. They did not show up for admissions; thus many seats remained vacant,” said Rambabu Sharma, director of Matushree Education College.

Only 17% seats filled in MEd course

Out of total 400 seats in eight MEd colleges in the city, merely 68 were  filled, which makes 17 percent of total vacancies. Maximum vacancies, 100 to be precise, were with Tagore Mahavidyalaya. Only two students took admission in the college. Rest six colleges have 50 seats each. Maximum of 16 seats were filled in Arihant College followed by School of Education followed (15), Victoria College (12), Vidyasagar College (11), Matushri College (7), and Khalsa College (5).

Final round of counselling BEd, MEd and six other education courses started on Friday. “DHE registration window will remain opened till August 8. Students who wish to take admission should register themselves online,” said Indore division additional director (higher education) KN Chaturvedi. The common merit list of registered candidates would be released on August 11 and allotment list on August 17.
