Nagpur: Gangster Sumeet Thakur, who was arrested in the bungalow of a beauty contest winner at Jaffar Nagar on Friday, was remanded to police custody till August 9 by the court on Saturday. Thakur’s girlfriend is also under scanner for allegedly harbouring him.
Thakur, who is likely to be booked under Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) again, was wanted for allegedly firing at three persons, including a rival who was injured in June. Sources said he hid his weapons at the girlfriend’s bungalow.
Zonal DCP Chinmay Pandit said Thakur is being quizzed in custody. “We are trying to ascertain his girlfriend’s role in the crime. If we find that she was involved, action will be taken against her,” he said.
Meanwhile, the crime branch has stepped up search for Thakur’s accomplice who was booked under MCOCA and was granted conditional bail by high court. He was supposed to reside in Wardha as per the court’s order.
Earlier this year, Thakur was found with another woman in a car at Empress Mall’s parking lot. While out on bail, Thakur had allegedly tried to bump off his rivals Sadiq and Kuldeep Pandey alias Pinnu at Pension Nagar following a telephonic spat over illegal transport of liquor to Chandrapur district, sources said.
