The Haemophilia patients in Uttarakhand would now get free treatment at their nearest Government hospital. At present, these patients have to travel either of the three- Government Doon Medical College Hospital Dehradun, Base Hospital in Haldwani or Government hospital at Kotdwar to get their regular doses of Haemophilia factors. Under the project to provide haemophilia factors to the nearest health facility of the patients, the National Health Mission (NHM) has decided to register patients by a mere phone call on Toll Free Number 104.

The State in-charge of the NHM and joint director State health services, Dr V S Tolia said that due to long time spent on travelling, the patients of Haemophilia face problem in the treatment. The availability of the medicines also used to compound their woes. He said that under the plan, the Haemophilia patient would automatically get registered in the NHM records by a mere phone call. The patient would have to mention his/ her Adhar card number for registration. Dr Tolia added that NHM and the State Government are providing injections of the Anti Haemophilic Factor (AHF) VII, VIII, IX and X to the three Government hospitals based in the State.

Haemophilia also called Bleeders disease is a genetic disorder in which the blood clot is not formed in the patients. In absence of clotting mechanism, any injury (external and internal) becomes fatal for such patients. As per the estimates, a total of 65,000 people in India are affected by this disease. However,  in  the absence of awareness, just 16000 patients have registered themselves. In Uttarakhand, there are  just 175 registered patients suffering from the disease.
