MUMBAI: The intermittent showers witnessed in the city, Navi Mumbai and Thane on Saturday are likely to continue on Sunday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
In the 24 hours ending 8am on Saturday, the IMD's Colaba observatory recorded 5.4mm rain while the Santa Cruz observatory recorded 8.8mm. The total rainfall recorded this monsoon has been in excess. Until now, the Colaba observatory has recorded 1,544mm, which is 183mm above normal, and IMD Santa Cruz has seen 1,944mm, which is 499mm above normal.

Nitha Sasidharan, a scientist at IMD, said that the showers recevied in the city were owing to a cyclonic circulation over south Gujarat and adjoining north Konkan region. "But, no intense rainfall is expected," she said.

A slight increase in rainfall activity in other parts of the state is also expected over the next few days. "A low pressure is expected over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal in the next 48 hours," A K Srivastava, head of climate monitoring and analysis at IMD, Pune, told TOI.
