BELAGAVI: Uttar Karnataka Vikas Vedike (UKVV) has condemned the statement of
Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and called it politically motivated.
The Shiv Sena on Thursday said that the
Maharashtra government should approach the Supreme Court and urged it to send a contempt notice to the Karnataka government for chief minister H D
Kumaraswamy's remark about making
Belagavi the second capital of the state.
Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray also stated that any such move by Karnataka would invite contempt of court since the case is still being heard in the Supreme Court.
On July 31, Kumaraswamy had said that his government was mulling shifting its offices to the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, in an attempt to address allegations of discrimination levelled by people of North Karnataka.
On Friday, Ashok Pujari of UKVV, said the trial over the petition filed by Maharashtra in the Supreme Court is yet to begin. “Contempt only applies when the court gives a verdict and the government defies it. Thackeray’s statement he added.
“Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy has announced that Belagavi will be made the second capital of the state. This is like rubbing salt into the wounds of people wanting to be a part of Maharashtra,” the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana'. The Sena sought to know how the Kumaraswamy government could take a decision on the disputed area while the matter was sub-judice. "The Maharashtra government should immediately take cognisance of this matter and lodge a protest with the Supreme Court. The state's lawyer should plead that the SC send a contempt notice to Karnataka government," it said.
Thanking Kumaraswamy for his immediate response to the protest of seers from North Karnataka, Pujari said the chief minister should announce Belagavi as the second capital of the state and shift administrative offices to SVS as soon as possible.
Pujari said Kumaraswamy must work on his assurances before his next visit to Belagavi. “We will wait for the next 2-3 months. If he fails to fulfill his promises, a protest will be held with 500 seers and 50,000 people of North Karnataka participatingin it,” he cautioned.
Farmer leaders Kalyanrao Muchalambi, R S Darge, T T Murkatnal, M T Patil and others were present.
