CHENNAI: The first female chief planner and former member of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (
CMDA),
S Chitra passed away in the city on Friday. She was 60.
Credited for her contributions to drafting the second masterplan for the
Chennai Metropolitan Area, 2026, she played a significant role in the heritage conservation committee.
According to sources, she was hospitalised for the last two days.
Chitra passed away early hours on Friday morning, sources added.
Having joined the CMDA in 1984, she had retired in 2016.
"She was the first lady chief planner and member of the CMDA. In the heritage conservation committee, she carried out the documentation of heritage structures in the city," an official said.
Recalling her as an upright officer, another official said she played a vital role in implementation of geographical information system (GIS) in the planning authority.
Vice-chairman of the Builders' Association of India's Southern Centre Ramaprabhu said she was an authority in the field of town and country planning. Post retirement, she was teaching students on town and country planning, he added.
