Tourists who went to the scenic Gundar dam in the foothills of the Western Ghats in the district on Saturday were in for a big surprise when they ran into the former captain of the Indian cricket team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Tourists coming to Courtallam make it a point to visit the Gundar dam, beyond Shencottai. Many of them take SUVs from the dam to reach private waterfalls.

Star attraction

A good number of tourists had come to the dam on Saturday morning too. When a swanky car reached the parking lot in the afternoon, they sighted ‘Captain Cool’. Several of them were ecstatic on seeing him from close quarters. The police had a tough time controlling the fans before Mr. Dhoni boarded an SUV for the 20-minute trip to one of the private waterfalls situated on an estate via a bumpy road. “Yes… he travelled in my Jeep and our young driver Murthy took Thala to the waterfalls,” said Ravi, owner of the vehicle.

Swaminathan, owner of the estate, told The Hindu that after taking a bath in the waterfalls for an hour, Mr. Dhoni left for the India Cements Ltd’s cricket ground, where Tamil Nadu Premier League matches are on.
