New Delhi, Justice Vineet Saran, Justice K M Joseph and Justice Indira Banerjee were on Saturday appointed judges of the Supreme Court.The notifications for these appointments were cleared late on Friday night by President Ram Nath Kovind. With these appointments, total number of judges in the Supreme Court has gone to 25, still short of six vacancies.
Justice Joseph is currently Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court while Justice Banerjee is Madras High Court Chief Justice and Vineet Saran at Odisha High Court as Chief Justice.
With Justice Joseph elevation to the apex court, the ongoing tussle between government and the judiciary has also come to an end.
The government had earlier, returned the recommendation of the Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra for appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court for reconsideration on the grounds that he lacked seniority.
Justice Joseph had struck down the imposition of President’s rule in Uttarakhand in 2016 after the dismissal of a Congress government led by Harish Rawat.
Besides these three appointments, notifications for appointments of Chief Justices of Patna, Jharkhand, Odisha, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Madras and acting Chief Justice of Sikkim High court were also announced.
