Close on the heels of recent Government Order issued by the State government on revising the pay scales of university teachers based on VII Pay Commission recommendations, the Bharathidasan University has decided to implement the new scale to its teaching staff members.
A formal decision to that effect is expected to be taken at the Finance Committee meeting of the University in Chennai on Friday. Besides Vice Chancellor P. Manisankar, who is also the Chairman of the Finance Committee, Higher Education Secretary, Expenditure Secretary and other members of the Committee are expected to participate in it. The meeting will discuss the allocation made in the budget of the university for meeting additional burden in terms of implementing new pay scale.
“We have decided to implement the new scales in accordance with the VII Pay Commission to faculty members. They will get new pay scale from August month itself,” Vice Chancellor told The Hindu.
Under the new scale, salary of professors will go up by about 18% to 24%. The average salary hike of professors will be between ₹20,000 and ₹30,000. It will be between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 for associate professors. For assistant professors the hike will be between ₹10,000 to ₹15,000.
University sources said that the changes will come into notional effect from January 1, 2016 and monetary effect from October 1, 2017. The arrears will be given with retrospective effect from October,1,2017.
It is said that there are about 230 faculty members in Bharathidasan University. Of them, there are 85 professors. Others are associate and assistant professors.
The University disburses about ₹5 crore towards salaries and perks to its employees from its general fund. It expected that it will require about ₹1 crore for meeting out additional burden for implementing the VII Pay Commission recommendations. The University has already implemented the new scale for non-teaching staff members.
