Andy Murray shakes hands with Marius Copil after the Citi Open third-round clash
Andy Murray is through to the Citi Open quarter-finals but the British tennis star says he may miss the last-eight clash in Washington, the BBC reports.
Murray beat Romania’s Marius Copil 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in a third-round match this morning that did not finish until 3.02am local time.
After the gruelling encounter Murray broke down in tears and this has placed doubts on him lining up in the quarter-final. He is set to play against Alex de Minaur tomorrow (1.20am UK time).
Speaking about the 3am finish, Murray said: “I don’t know how players are expected to recover from that. My body doesn’t feel great right now.
“Finishing matches at three in the morning isn’t good for anyone involved in the event - players, TV, fans, anyone. When you’re expected to come back and perform the next day, I think that’s unreasonable.”
Three-time Grand Slam winner Murray is returning to the court after a long-term hip injury and surgery. He missed last month’s Wimbledon championships but is aiming to play in the US Open later this month.
