DARTMOUTH –A New Bedford man trying to avoid arrest on drug charges attempted to drive his vehicle into detectives before being apprehended in an investigation that netted two arrests in a drug deal, police said.

Erick Roman, 29, of 77 Sidney St., New Bedford is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, failure to stop for a police officer, possession with intent to deliver a Class B drug and conspiracy to violate drug laws.

Police narcotics detectives said they were attempting to negotiate an arrest in connection with a narcotics investigation about 3 p.m. on McCabe Street, said the report from Detective Kyle Costa, police public information officer.

He said detectives extracted Roman from his vehicle after he attempted to strike the officer with it, and the vehicle rolled into another one parked in the area.

Detectives said they observed Roman ingesting narcotics prior to his arrest.

As a result of the accident, rescue crews transported Roman to St. Luke's Hospital, New Bedford, where he was treated and released, Costa said.

In a related arrest, detectives charged Kelly Oliveira, 30, of 33 McCabe St., with possession of a Class B drug, possession of a Class C drug and conspiracy to violate drug laws, Costa reported.

He said detectives believe she was buying drugs from Roman.

They were both scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in New Bedford Distict Court.

No other details were available.
