GONE! R Ashwin strikes again and England skipper Joe Root has been dismissed. A terrific catch at back slip by KL Rahul. The umpires were checking if there was a bat, but Root decided to just walk off, knowing there was. Excellent sportsmanship. BIG WICKET! England 39/3

Sanjay Manjrekar gives an insight into the pitch - He believes the clay-ey nature of the surface makes the ball stick a tad bit longer before coming nicely on the bat and that small fraction made the difference for Indian batsmen.
Coming in to bat at number four Kohli began cautiously and then survived two dropped chances. Making most of those opportunities he made the English bowlers pay and went on to notch up his 22nd Test ton. Countering the English conditions always seemed like a challenge but Kohli showed how he had made subtle adjustments in his technique to counter the hostile environment. It’s been said on these pages before but it’s worth repeating it here. Kohli wasn’t ever a prodigy or a genius of a batsman. He is someone who has willed himself to greater heights. A Sachin Tendulkar or Viv Richards wouldn’t have attempted so many little changes. Because, they didn’t have to. See Tendulkar vs Steyn for example. Vicious outswingers, one after another, and Tendulkar kept stretching forward, covering for the swing and driving through off. It was awe-inspiring.

The former England batsman Allan Lamb says he had goosebumps on seeing Sam Curran, the son of his “dear old friend” Kevin who died in 2012, scythe through India with a triple strike. The story of Sam and his brothers, Tom and Ben, is a remarkable tale of facing adversity, compassion from the cricketing fraternity, and a fierce competitive streak which, in Lamb’s assessment, is genetic. Kevin used to play for Zimbabwe back in the 80’s, and was known for his larger-than-life personality at the county Northants where Lamb also played.

“We had them at 100 for five, and felt in the game but then Virat played really well with their tail and frustrated us a little bit. Numbers 9, 10 or 11 aren’t walkovers anymore, and they can all hold a bat now. It was a frustrating partnership, but we’ve just got to be positive going into tomorrow.”

“This knock could probably come in second to Adelaide. It still remains very special to me because it was the second innings and we were chasing a target. I had clarity that we are chasing a target and not once did I think that we’re not. It is a beautiful zone to be in and today I’m very happy and very grateful to have the opportunity to help the team this way and pull us back in the Test. We’re here to compete, we’re here to fight and we’re going to continue to do that."

Hello and welcome to our Live Blog on the third day of the first Test. It has been a roller-coaster ride so far in Edgbaston. Sessions after sessions, the script has been changed, as if it is being passed on from director to director. Virat Kohli seems to be the lead hero from India. For England, it has been a multi-cast star with Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Sam Curran in the lead. Ravichandran Ashwin has been the supporting hero for India, and he would look to take the lead role in the sequel - the second innings. He has already dismissed the flop actor Alastair Cook. But plenty of big stars are lined up to come up from England in the sequel. Who will star tonight?
