NRC: Missing names will not lose their voting rights

Persons whose names are missing from National Register of citizens (NRC), may still continue to be on electoral rolls. The deletion of names from the voters list is not only exclusive of NRC updation but it requires a month's notice to contest deletion. Names of more than 40 lakh people have not been included in the final list of NRC and it expected that most of them will file claims. For a person who is on the rolls but not in NRC, the due process of law requires the election officer (DEO) to issue a notice for deletion. The respondent would get a month to produce supporting documents, including citizenship proof. If he submits these documents to the satisfaction of DEO, his name would remain on the rolls irrespective of NRC status.
