PATNA: JD(U) MLA Bima Bharti’s son Deepak Kumar (21) was found dead under mysterious circumstances near a railway track in front of Nalanda Medical College and Hospital here in the wee hours of Friday.
Bharti represents the Rupauli constituency of Purnia in the state assembly and her husband Awadhesh Mandal has several criminal cases lodged against him.

DIG (central range) Rajesh Kumar said Deepak had gone to Mahavir Colony at Sandalpur under the Bahadurpur police station area to meet his two friends – Ritwik Roushan and Mrityunjay Kumar – on Thursday night.

“Deepak decided to stay at the tenanted accommodation of his two friends for a night after having dinner with them. One of his friends found him missing from the bed around 3.30am. Both Ritwik and Mrityunjay kept calling Deepak, but their calls went unanswered. Someone finally picked up the call around 6am and informed Deepak’s two friends that the cellphone was lying beside a body near the railway track. The two immediately rushed to the spot. After identifying the body as that of Deepak, they informed the MLA about the incident,” the DIG added.

He said forensic experts have collected samples from the spot for scientific investigation. “Footages of CCTV cameras installed in the locality have also been collected,” the DIG said, adding several injury marks were found on Deepak’s body, especially on his head and thigh.

Bharti, in her FIR lodged with Rajendra Nagar Terminal GRP, has accused 10 persons, including former Rupauli MLA Shankar Singh, of killing her son.

The DIG said the spot from where Deepak’s body was recovered is used by commuters for crossing railway tracks. “According to Ritwik and Mrityunjay, Deepak was upset ever since he had a breakup with his girlfriend about a month back,” the DIG said.

Patna SSP Manu Maharaaj said a postmortem was carried out on Deepak’s body to ascertain the cause behind his death and the process was video recorded. “Police are probing the incident from all angles,” the SSP said.
