CHANDIGARH: Police resorted to the use of force to disperse a group of Congress workers headed by party’s
Haryana unit president Ashok Tanwar as they attempted to gate crash into Indira Gandhi University, Meerpur in
Rewari on Thursday morning. The cops also made preventive arrests of Tanwar and party workers as the university security was strengthened.
Initially, the university had given the permission for Tanwar’s programme ‘Parivartan Lao’ rally for Thursday, but had withdrawn it later.
“This is very strange. The place where the youths learn and their leadership qualities are groomed, is declared out of bounds for politics. It is clear vendetta against us. We have had our programmes in the universities at Rohtak, Kurukshetra , Sirsa and Hisar. Any way, it is a matter of few months and we will look into all such acts once our party comes to power,” Tanwar said.
According to sources, on Thursday morning the Congress workers had started assembling at some distance from the university gate. Anticipating disturbance, the university gates were closed.
Led by Tanwar, the Congress workers moved toward Rao Tula Ram gate of the varsity to gain access. Some of the workers even clashed with the cops, who initially used water cannons. It was followed by a mild cane-charge. Finally, the cops headed by a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) took Tanwar and his close supporters into custody.
