Two men open fire in Dombivli to rob jeweller, caught by passersby and handed to cops

Hearing the robbers, people in the neighbourhood caught the duo and thrashed them.

Two men, who allegedly opened fire in a bid to rob a jeweller at Dombivli in the district, were caught by people and handed over to the police, an officer said on Friday.

The accused -- Gopal Yadav (21) and Vikas Singh (20) -- were later placed under arrest for the incident that took place late last night, the officer from Tilak Nagar police station said.

According to police, the jeweller was going home after closing the shop at 10pm when the accused came there and opened fire with the intention of robbing him of his belongings.

The jeweller’s assistant, who was with him, raised an alarm. Hearing him, people in the neighbourhood caught the duo and thrashed them. They later handed over the accused to the police.

The duo was booked under sections 397 (robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt), 307 (attempt to murder), 341 (wrongful restraint), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and the Arms Act.

Further investigation is on.
