MADURAI: Former
Tirunelveli district panchayat councillor S Maria Deepa, 40, was murdered by her
husband when she was standing in front of her house near Kadayam on Friday morning.
Police said D Selvam, 50, murdered Deepa by slitting her throat. The Kadayam police were searching for Selvam who fled the place after murdering his wife.
The couple lived in Arunachalampatti village in Tirunelveli district. Theirs was a love marriage. The couple didn’t have children. They adopted a girl who is eight years old now.
Selvam, who had served in the Indian Army, retired five years ago. Deepa, who had been with the AIADMK, quit the party and joined the DMK.
The couple had not been in good terms over the last four years. They had lived separately in the same village, police said.
They said Selvam had not been happy with his wife’s political activities and had wanted to divorce her. The man applied for divorce, but she was not ready for it.
On Friday morning, the woman was standing in front of her house when Selvam picked up a quarrel with her, resulting in her
murder.
