The Madurai city police on Friday afternoon arrested V.K. Gurusamy, former Zonal Chairman of Madurai Corporation and DMK functionary, in possession of a country-made pistol near Munichalai junction along with two of his accomplices.

Gurusamy, who has multiple murder cases against him, was notorious for the rivalry between his gang and the gang of Rajapandi, also a former Zonal Chairman of Madurai Corporation. The rivalry has so far resulted in at least 10 murders and among other heinous crimes, police sources said.

Inspector General and Commissioner of Police (Madurai City) Davidson Devasirvatham said that the special teams were monitoring the activities of the two gangs and Gurusamy’s car was intercepted when he was coming inside the city to attend a family function on Friday after many months. He is believed to be staying in Ramanathapuram district.

A search on the vehicle led to seizure of weapons, which included a country-made pistol and five rounds of ammunition. Gurusamy, his driver, and an accomplice named Rafeeq Raja were subsequently detained by the police and a case was registered under the Indian Arms Act.

The three were remanded in judicial custody after producing before a magistrate.

According to the police, the arrest of Gurusamy followed the arrest and investigation of one of his accomplices named Kaleeswaran by the city police a few days ago. While he was arrested in possession of a pistol, he reportedly confessed to the police that Gurusamy also carried such pistols.
