Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Citizenship rights” (August 1). It is said, in the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which excluded 40 lakh people from the list of Assam residents, majority of them are Bangladeshi Muslims.

It was a long-declared policy of the Centre that Hindus, who entered Assam under duress due to religious persecution, will be granted citizenship. There is no opaqueness in the whole exercise. The Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act of 1983 tried to do the same but due to lack of sincerity of the then Congress Government, nothing progressed. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was the only one to raise her voice against the NRC even though people had the facility to appeal against the exclusion.
