Written by Abhishek Lohia

The ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday won the Jalgaon Municipal Corporation elections and bags 57 seats. The saffron party wins from Sangli as well, as it is ahead in Sangli-Miraj-Kupwar in 41 seats. The civic poll comes amid tense relationship between the ruling BJP and its former ally Shiv Sena. Experts are believing that Friday’s civic polls results could further impact their ties and Shiv Sena could took a stand for the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. However, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress had announced an alliance before the elections to take down the saffron wave in Maharashtra. In North Maharashtra, Jalgaon is home turf of BJP heavyweights Girish Mahajan and Eknath Khadse, while, in Western Maharashtra, Sangli is native place of state NCP president Jayant Patil and Congress leader Vishwajit Kadam.

According to election authorities, the Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation (SMKMC) in western the part of Maharashtra recorded an estimated 60% turnout while the Jalgaon Municipal Corporation (JMC) in the northern part of Maharashtra seen55% voting. There were 451 candidates in the fray for the 78-seat SMKMS and 303 for the 75 seats in JMC.
