GUWAHATI: Protests broke out in Assam on Thursday over West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee's 'baseless' statements regarding the fallout of the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) released on Monday.
State Congress president Ripun Bora said the law would take its own course. "I have already condemned her statement. It's provocative and uncalled for. Now the law will take its own course," said Bora.

The Asom Gana Parishad also asked the TMC leader not to make any such remarks without understanding the depth of the problem. "This is highly condemnable. Her remarks can create communal tension. We also don't appreciate her move to send a TMC delegation to Assam," said senior AGP leader Manoj Saikia.

The Asom Jatiatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad, Hindu Bengali Nagarik Manch and the Brihattar Axomiya Mahila Mancha staged protests. "We burnt an effigy of Banerjee. She should take care of the people of West Bengal. We can take care of ourselves," said a member of HBNM. Members of the Brihattar Axomiya Mahila Mancha burnt an effigy in Kamrup.

The Patriotic People's Front of Assam criticized her for disregarding the SC. "Instead of making such statements she should take the lead in compiling a comprehensive NRC for her own state as other states are demanding. If she needs any help in this exercise, she can ask us," said a party member.
