The Snapdragon 855 is unlikely to power smartphones till next year. As per the previous rumours, Qualcomm is already working on the chipset and expected to unveil it in the upcoming Qualcomm Summit by the end of this year. Earlier, a Sony smartphone with the codename H8526 was said to be the processor surfaced on Geekbench. Now, a Xiaomi smartphone has appeared on Geekbench with the codename Xiaomi SDM855 for arm64.
While the name does suggest that the smartphone will run on the upcoming Snapdragon 855SoC. Now, the Geekbench benchmark result shows that the phone is equipped with the msm8998 processor, the name also stands for last-year’s Snapdragon 835 chipset.
Benchmark scores comparison
Going by the test results, the smartphone scored 1784 points in the single-core test and 6359 points in multi-core test. The scores are even lower than the current-generation Snapdragon 845 chipset. Comparing it with the leaked scores of the Sony’s upcoming smartphone, said to be running on Snapdragon 855, the device scored 3033 and 10992 in single and multiple core tests respectively which further clarifies that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor does not powers the Xiaomi phone.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 will be the first processor from the company based on the 7nm architecture. With this, the company aims to increase the efficiency and power consumption of the upcoming flagship devices. The next-generation processor is also said to come with a new and faster Snapdragon X24 modem.
To add to the note, Huawei is also said to be working on its next-generation chipset based on 7nm architecture. Dubbed as HiSilicon Kirin 980, the SoC will be clocked at 2.8GHz and will be built by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturer Company (TSMC). The new chip is expected to have quad-core of Cortex A77 and Cortex A55 CPUs and come with the company’s own graphics processing unit to provide at most 1.5 times better graphics performance than the current-generation Snapdragon processor.
Several reports have also suggested that Apple and Samsung are also working on their upcoming chipset based on the same architecture.
