CHENNAI: The Virugambakkam police arrested seven men on Thursday for assaulting the staff of R R Anbu Biryani in Saligramam on Sunday.

The arrested were M Kishore, 23, J 'Kutty' Kishore, 24, M Sathish, 23, N Karthik, 22, M Suresh, 21, V Manikandan, 23, and H Ruthara Kumar, 26. Police are searching for suspended DMK workers K L Yuvaraj and Diwakar. Police said Sathish, a BCA student from Mangadu, was also involved in the ruckus.

CCTV camera footage of the incident went viral on social media on Wednesday. The gang thrashed the hotel staff after their demand for free biryani for 30 DMK workers was turned down. They also ransacked the eatery. Three people were injured in the incident.

Police said the group reached the restaurant at 10.15pm from Kauvery Hospital where DMK chief M Karunanidhi is admitted. When DMK youth wing members K L Yuvaraj and Diwakar demanded free biryani, the restaurant's manager Prakash, who was at the cashier's table, told them that the shop had closed for the day and there was no food available.

All seven men were booked for causing riot and attempt to murder and have been remanded under judicial custody. Meanwhile, DMK working president M K Stalin on Thursday visited the restaurant and spoke to the owner and employees who were attacked by party members.
