Doctor mowed down by bus in city

A doctor was on Thursday run over by a speeding private bus near the Chandrasekharpur petrol pump here, sparking tension in the area.

Reports said the deceased identified as Basant Rout, working as a medicine specialist in Angul, was walking towards Jayadev Vihar at around 8. 30 am when the bus knocked him down.

Irate locals and onlookers vandalised the bus. Sensing trouble, the driver and helper of the vehicle fled from the spot.

“We heard a loud sound but could not make out what had happened. Suddenly, people started gathering and asked all bus passengers to get off the vehicle. Then, they smashed the bus’s glass windows,” said a passenger.

After getting information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the doctor’s body. “We have sent the body to the Capital Hospital for postmortem. We have informed the family members of the deceased and they would be arriving here shortly,” informed a police official.

Vehicular traffic on both sides of the road was disrupted for over an hour following the mishap.
