CHANDIGARH: Three to four people stabbed a man of 31 to death in Manimajra’s Shastri Nagar area on Wednesday night and his family suspects some neighbours to be behind the crime.
The IT Park police have registered a case of murder against unidentified people and, rounded up a suspect, and started interrogating him. No formal arrest has been made in this case, so far. The wife of murder victim Ajay Kumar has told police that around 9.30pm, he was talking with someone over mobile phone when three to four men came over, stabbed him repeatedly, and fled.

Cops say that Ajay’s wife came out of house to look for him and found him lying on the road in a pool of blood. She called police, who moved Ajay to the Sector-16 Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), from where he was referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday night. Police moved his body to the mortuary for autopsy.

“Ajay took most of the stab wounds on his legs and he died of excessive bleeding,” a police official said. Ajay’s father, Ram Avatar, alleged that his son was killed by his neighbours, who wanted to settle an old score. Ajay’s family protested outside the IT Park police station and demanded that the accused be arrested. Relatives found Ajay’s mobile phone near the scene of crime but his wallet containing Rs 15,000 cash was missing.

Initially, police said it was a case of hit-and-run and that the man had taken head injuries. “Those who stab anybody to kill always go for the chest and the stomach, not the legs,” a cop said. Deputy superintendent of police (public relations) Pawan Kumar said a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) had been registered on the complaint of Ajay’s family and police were looking into the robbery angle, too.
