WATCH: Here's how your car's carburettor works

Even though electronic fuel injection has become the primary mode of fueling modern cars, carburettors played a huge part and getting vehicle mobile.

So how does it work?

The purpose of a carburettor is to mix the right amount of fuel with air so that the engine runs efficiently. Too little fuel mixed with air means the engine runs lean while too much means it is running rich - potentially causing problems.

The carburettor system was gradually phased out from the 1980s. Lawn mowers and boat engines still make use of it.

Plenty of muscle cars and exotics like the Chevrolet Camaro and the Lamborghini Countach made use of carburettor up until the age of fuel-injection.
