TSPCB cracks whip against errant hospitals

more-in

Private and government hospitals with over 50 beds should obtain a consent for operation (CFO) from the State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) within the coming 15 days. They should also install sewage treatment plants (STPs) within two months.

Member-Secretary of the TSPCB P. Satyanarayana Reddy on Friday issued instructions to this effect, during the task force committee meeting on ‘Biomedical waste management rules-2016’.

Mr. Reddy expressed dissatisfaction over the management of biomedical waste by hospitals, and said action would be taken against hospitals not installing STPs within the stipulated time. They would be prosecuted, and even shut down, he warned.

If detailed project reports were submitted for construction of STPs in Osmania and Gandhi hospitals, the PCB would provide funding for the same, he said, while issuing orders for prosecution of 11 hospitals across the State, which had been functioning for a long time without STPs.

Instructions were issued to the attending representatives of the Osmania, Gandhi, NIMS and area hospitals of various districts to appoint a special official each to oversee management of biomedical waste.

Mr. Reddy asked the hospital managements to submit a report to the TSPCB about the quantum of waste being collected, and upload the same on the hospitals’ websites.
