Two students of Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Koyilandy, were found dead on the railway tracks near Vellarakkad station in the district on Thursday morning.

They were identified as Rijo Robert, 20, of Moodadi and Fahmitha Abdul Hameed, 20, of Naduvannur.

Both were pursuing training in hardware and networking at the ITI. The police said the two were run over by train following a suspected suicide attempt.

The bodies were spotted by local residents around 6.30 a.m. The bodies were shifted to the Koyilandy Taluk Hospital after inquest. The police said the students had taken the extreme step as their families had vehemently opposed their relationship.

A case was registered under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The statements of the parents of the two students will be recorded soon. Parents of Fahmitha had already filed a complaint at the Perambra police station, stating that she had been missing since Wednesday. Rijo too had reportedly left home early on Wednesday.
