The crime branch on Friday registered an FIR against the police sub-inspector Gautam Shetkar for allegedly sexually exploiting a 20-year-old woman police constable and abetting her suicide.

Shetkar has been booked under the IPC Section 306 (abetment of suicide) and Section 377 (unnatural

offences — whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal).

The FIR has been registered upon the complaint on behalf of the state filed by police inspector Rahul Parab of the crime branch after conducting a detailed enquiry into the unnatural death case.

Referring to the case, the police said that Shetkar, then attached to the Verna police station, was in a relationship with the deceased woman police constable. The accused allegedly sexually exploited her and then started avoiding her, leading her to a stage of depression thereby instigated and abetted her to commit suicide.

Earlier this year the victim consumed inedible substance.  She later died while undergoing treatment at the GMC.

The Anjuna police had registered a case of unnatural death, and the case was transferred to the crime branch.

Subsequently Shetkar was transferred from the Verna police station to the GRP, Altinho, Panaji.

Claiming that the deceased had become a victim of sexual, physical and mental exploitation at the hands of the police officer, family members of the deceased had demanded a fair and impartial inquiry into the death case.

The family members had also claimed that they had named a police sub-inspector in their complaint with the police.
