Trinamool Congress Member Saugata Roy raised the issue of the National Register of Citizens during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, accusing the ruling party of pursuing a “divide and rule policy” in Assam.
Stating that he had moved an adjournment motion to discuss the issue, Mr. Roy said that apart from Bengali-speaking Muslims and Hindus, Biharis, people from Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu were also among the 40-lakh names omitted from the NRC.
He said that six-lakh Scheduled Caste (Matua) people were also excluded from the list. Wondering if those who did not support the ruling party would be left out, he demanded that Home Minister Rajnath Singh visit the state immediately.
